How do I get to be a Truck and Transport Mechanic?

A Truck and Coach Technician Certificate of Qualification is a solid foundation on which to build a successful career. The majority of learning takes place on the job. However, most apprenticeship programs require that applicants have at least a high school diploma.

Technical Training/Certification/Licensing
  • Apprenticeship training (4 years) leading to a Certificate of Qualification. The term for this certificate may vary by region. You may also qualify for an interprovincial licence (Red Seal) that will allow you to ply your trade in other provinces or jurisdictions
  • Other Occupational Health and Safety (OH+S) training may be required (first aid, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems, etc.)
  • You may be required to take manufacturer/vendor training courses as well
Physical/Medical
Because truck parts are so heavy, a Truck and Transport Mechanic needs to be in good shape and have good physical health to accomplish many tasks, including moving and manoeuvring parts and equipment.

Language
There is no specific language requirement to work as a Truck and Transport Mechanic.

Other Attributes
You must have excellent mechanical abilities, and it's a plus to have good customer service skills, communication skills (written and verbal), computer skills, and an understanding of technology.
