Maintenance Helper / Service Employee

The best place to start.

Do you love the idea of fixing “big rigs” but don't know where to get your start? Well, perhaps being a Maintenance Helper/Service Employee is the best place to soak up knowledge about the industry. You'll learn what's involved in the maintenance side of the business, including the hard work, attention to detail and dedication it takes to master this important part of the industry. So if you're the kind of person who likes to understand how all parts of an operation come together to work as one unit, then why not explore what it takes to become a Maintenance Helper/Service Employee?

What would I do?

There are always small jobs that must be done to keep fleet maintenance operations running smoothly. You'll help move vehicles in and out of the shop, and wash them. You'll also keep the shop work area clean and functional. In this job, you'll get to know all areas of the maintenance operation.

Helpers also check vehicles to make sure that they're outfitted with the right equipment and accessories. This ranges from load securement and protection devices to safety equipment, like fire extinguishers, and spare tires. You may assist the parts department by picking up critical parts when needed.

In some cases, the mechanic's helper can do small repairs that aren't otherwise regulated, like changing light bulbs on trailers.

You can use your experience in this position to land a formal apprenticeship in a vehicle maintenance trade.
