Work In Operations

Licensing And Permitting Specialist

Keep everyone moving. Literally.

Driver? Check. Trailer? Check. Cargo? Check. Licence and permits?

Without the necessary licences and permits, goods won't get into the hands of consumers, and trucking companies would be left with loaded trucks sitting idle – effectively bringing the industry to a grinding halt! Licensing and Permitting Specialists are vital, as they're responsible for making sure that drivers have the appropriate licence, permits and documentation to haul goods into different parts of Canada or the U.S. If you're the type of person who thrives on the pressure of keeping goods moving without delay, then keep reading.

What would I do?

As a Licensing and Permitting Specialist, you'll be responsible for sorting through the complexity of interprovincial and international licensing matters.

This function is unique to the trucking industry. Why? Because carriers do business in each state, province or territory that they travel in. Trucking companies must make sure that their trucks and tractor-trailer units are appropriately licensed for each jurisdiction. In addition, each province, territory or state may have additional requirements such as road or highway use taxes. These must be calculated and remitted based on vehicle mileage records.

When licensing vehicles, trucking companies need to know in advance where the vehicle will travel, and what maximum weight it's expected to carry (licence fees are generally based on the vehicle's total weight). Since many trucking companies contract with owner-operators for driving services and equipment, you'll also be responsible for licensing and de-licensing these vehicles on an ongoing basis.

The ability to read and interpret regulations and apply this knowledge to practical situations is essential for this job.
