How do I get to be a Dock Worker?

Here are some conditions you may have to meet to become a Dock Worker:

Education
While there are no specific education requirements to work as a Dock Worker, most companies demand that new employees have at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Many Dock Workers work part-time while attending college or university.

Technical Training/Certification/Licensing
  • There is little specific training available. Learning is generally covered by on-the-job training
  • If, as a Dock Worker, you'll be driving the forklift, you may be required to get formal forklift certification training
  • Other Occupational Health and Safety (OH+S) training may be required (first aid, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems, etc.)
Physical/Medical
There are no specific requirements, although good physical condition is essential.

Language
There is no specific language requirement to work as a Dock Worker.

Other Attributes
Strong customer service, communication and computer skills are all useful. In addition, a criminal record/background check may be required.
