Dock Foreman/Supervisor

The leader of the dock.

Every good organization needs a leader to run the docks. To excel as a Dock Foreman/Supervisor, you'll have to apply everything you learned “working on the docks” in order to successfully oversee and run the dock and warehouse operations. So if you'd like to orchestrate everything that goes on at the docks, then perhaps a career as a Dock Foreman/Supervisor is the right one for you.

What would I do?

As a Dock Foreman/Supervisor, it will be your responsibility to supervise and co-ordinate the people who have to load and unload trailers, and move and store freight within the warehouse. You may also assign job tasks to dock workers according to loading and unloading schedules, and oversee trucks being loaded. You must make sure that regulations are being respected and that the trailers are being loaded properly to minimize shifting or damage to goods during transit. You'll also have to check shipments against work orders.

You'll report to the Dock Manager and work with other supervisors to ensure everything goes smoothly during and between shifts. You may also train new employees in their job duties and develop methods to improve employee performance.

Supervisors are also responsible for providing a clean, safe environment for all personnel. It's also their job to see that all work is performed according to company-approved procedures, and health and safety guidelines.
